GENERAL INFORMATION FOR INVESTIGATON WORKBOOKS YEAR 2

Now that you have started the second year of IB Visual Arts course, it is important we seriously look at the quality and direction of your IWB. During this part of the course emphasis must be placed on Studio Work and the production of a body of work to exhibit for final assessment. Although the Studio Work is the most important element, you can not afford to neglect the development of your IWB. Most of the work within the book needs to be independent, self-directed and produced outside art class.

The following points may help you with the development of the book. The IWB needs to be very independent, the ideas are yours and it should reflect your personality and interest. There needs to be a close connection between the IWB and your Studio Work. The IWB is the place to experiment, research and work out ideas for Studio Work.

In your IWB, you need to discuss art, giving personal and informed views on your work and work of other artists to look at it is important that you research the artist and discover links or similarities between your artwork and theirs.

You need to become an “expert” on at least one artist that has an obvious link with your StudioWork.

You must research their brief biography, what social events and movements in the society, history and

culture affected their art, make informed comments about their artwork and draw similarities between your own Studio Work.

When you are using the internet or a book to find information ALWAYS give the full reference. This is an IBO requirement. The format for this is the full web address and the date you accessed it, and for the book the writer, title, publisher, edition date and page numbers. For periodicals the name of the magazine, issue number, date, page number, the writer and the title of the article. The same goes for television programs and films. Sources of information must always be acknowledged.
